This panel was found by the vendor in an empty shop premises in Merrion Street, Leeds in 1979. The shop was one of a number scheduled for demolition at the time and research has revealed that one of them was a record retailer, J. H. Evans, which is recorded at that address between 1968 and 1972. After this date the premises were occupied by another business and the panel seems to have languished there until rescued by the vendor. Despite extensive enquiries, the exact date and origins of the panel are still a matter of conjecture but it is believed that it may be one of a set of four such panels, each of the band members, that Kit Lambert had had made, circa 1966/67, to be displayed in the theatre foyers at concerts to create a visual impact as the audience arrived. It has certainly been professionally made and its robust nature indicates it was designed for long-term usage, rather than the usual promo items that might have been used in record shops. Well-known Who fan, Irish Jack, corresponded with the vendor about the panel and he suggests that the panel was actually a unique piece, commissioned by Kit Lambert, and used for promotion at venues for various UK package tours. It is possible that, if this was the case, the panel then somehow found its way into the shop in Leeds after being used at one of the Who s concerts in the city.
