Mary Ford

Artist information unavailable.

Mary Ford was born in London but brought up in Cornwall from the age of six. Her family lived aboard a ketch moored at St. Mawes - an idyllic childhood. From 1970-1976, Mary attended art schools in London - first the Byam Shaw School of Art and then the Royal Academy Schools where William Scott was her tutor. Her paintings are representational with a simplification of form which emphasizes their abstract qualities. Influences have been many, notably the St. Ives School painters Alfred Wallis, Ben Nicholson and John Wells. She says - I love Walliss painting - painted purely from the heart. I admire the sophistication of Nicholson and Wells. I hope my painting comes somewhere between the two. Mary Ford has returned to live in Cornwall where she finds the quality of light and atmosphere a constant inspiration. She has had solo exhibitions at Sadlers Wells Theatre in London and the Eastgate Gallery in Chichester. She has had group exhibitions at a number of galleries, including the Wills Lane Gallery in St. Ives, the Royal Academy Summer Exhibitions, Easton Rooms at Rye Art Gallery, The Gallery in Cork Street, London, and the Mall Galleries in London. She is represented in collections held at Truro Crown Courts and the Slaughter & May Art Collection in London, as well as a number of private collections.
