George Gower (died 1596) was appointed Sergeant-Painter to
Queen Elizabeth in 1581, and was the leading English portrait painter of his generation.
Gower was a gentleman by birth, and painted many of the leading nobles and courtiers of
the day. His style is distinguished by great clarity and elegance of painting, with strong
attention to detail and the ability to overlay features of his sitter in a translucent
fashion, giving great quality of depth to his work.
